As performers, we are inevitably confronted with multiple sets of dualities
- the “permanent” score or text versus the living moment and duration of performance,
- the silent score, which we manifest (materialize) in sound
- balance of objective and subjective awareness
- origin of sound in the body and the reality of sound at the back of the hall
- generation of unique sound, yet being dependent on reception of music by listener
- need for a bold and strong intention, yet being fully ready to improvise
- paraphrase of the Amish saying “do your work as if you had thousands of hours but also if it were your final day”.
For us, that might mean:
Play as if every note were as essential as your heartbeat and also as if only the big shape counted.
